Class Meeting Agenda Template (80-minute)

This is the standard-term agenda template. For the 3-hour summer format, see agenda-template-summer.md.

Each 80-minute class meeting is built around four blocks: lecture, reading response discussion, student presentation, and hands-on activity or breakout discussion. Because 80 minutes is tight, we typically pick one of hands-on activity or breakout discussion per meeting rather than both — see the breakouts index and the activities index to plan the mix week-to-week.

Two motifs work well. Pick whichever fits the day’s material.

Motif A — Discussion sandwich

Best when the assigned reading is dense and student-led discussion should carry the room’s energy into the lecture.

Time Min Block Notes
0:00–0:05 5 Housekeeping + warm-up prompt
0:05–0:15 10 Reading response Q&A Instructor facilitates
0:15–0:35 20 Student presentation Student-led
0:35–0:55 20 Lecture Book concepts and technical framing
0:55–1:15 20 Breakout or hands-on activity Small groups; report-back at the end
1:15–1:20 5 Wrap + reading preview

Motif B — Frontloaded lecture

Best when the day introduces new technical machinery students need before they can meaningfully discuss.

Time Min Block Notes
0:00–0:10 10 Housekeeping + reading Q&A quick hits
0:10–0:35 25 Lecture Book concepts and technical framing
0:35–0:55 20 Student presentation Student-led
0:55–1:15 20 Hands-on activity or breakout Small groups; report-back at the end
1:15–1:20 5 Wrap + reading preview
